"Want You Back" is a song recorded by Australian popular rock band five Seconds of Summer. It was written past Calum Hood, Asia Whiteacre, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Ashton Irwin, Luke Hemmings, Steve Mac and Andrew Goldstein, with production handled past Goldstein and Andrew Wells. The song was released via Capitol Records on 22 February 2018, equally the lead single from their 3rd studio album, Youngblood (2018).

Background and release [edit]

Guitarist Michael Clifford first opened upwardly nigh the third anthology and the upcoming unmarried in an interview with Billboard in December 2017.[two] He admitted: "We're at a point now where we're almost prepare to put out our first unmarried," as he promised that fans could expect it "actually, really early in the new year".[3] [iv] [v]

On 16 February 2018, the band posted a blackness and white moving-picture show featuring all members on Twitter, captioning it "Backside The Scenes 2018." They shared another tweet with the hashtag "#5SOS3ISCOMING" shortly afterwards, hinting at new releases.[6] [7] They too teased a few lyrics from the song and posted a GIF which says "We Desire You Back".[8] The vocal was officially announced on 19 February 2018, along with its release date, comprehend art,[9] [10] [xi] [12] and a brief sound snippet.[xiii] The song was released alongside the announcement of their worldwide promotional 5SOS III Tour dates.[14] [15]

Drummer Ashton Irwin said of the song in an interview with Beats 1: "'Desire You Dorsum' articulates the band nosotros were, we are now, and what we're gonna exist, that's why I like it and that's why nosotros picked it. We also made it with shut friends similar we've got Andrew Goldstein who we literally see every week. We party together, nosotros confess our sorrows and happiness. We speak to this homo everyday."[16] The ring told news.com.au that they are "super nervous" about the comeback song which will innovate their tertiary album.[17]

Critical reception [edit]

Madeline Roth of MTV News stated that the song "marks a huge deviation from the band'due south raucous popular-punk roots". She constitute the band "opting for a slick, more than polished pop sound on the new melody, which finds them reminiscing about an ex and wondering what went incorrect". Althea Legaspi of Rolling Stone regarded information technology equally a "pop-flavored rails reflects on a lost beloved and captures the yearning that oft follows a breakdown".[18] Hugh McIntyre of Forbes constitute the vocal "surprisingly slick, especially for a ring that has pushed a narrative of being rowdy rock boys", and he noticed that the vocal was "more than mature".[xix]

Mike Wass of Idolator wrote that the band have abandoned "the pop/punk of their showtime two albums and swoop head-commencement into slick, radio-friendly pop with a rhythmic edge".[twenty] Rania Aniftos of Billboard deemed it an "apologetic pop track" and a "synth-y upbeat melody".[21] Nicole Mastrogiannis of iHeartRadio opined that it "takes a footstep back from 5SOS'south signature pop/punk vibes" and "playing upwardly the guys' pop side a bit more".[22]

Live performances [edit]

On 11 April 2018, the band performed the song live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[23] [24] They too performed the single during the fourteenth flavour of The Voice on eight May 2018.[25]

Music video [edit]

The official music video was released on 27 March 2018. It features the members of the band performing in a colorful i-room ready, depicting a scenario where the rules of gravity does non apply. The furniture tin can be seen fixed to the walls and ceiling every bit the ring members remain on the footing while singing and playing their instruments. In some shots, they appear to exist walking and sitting on the walls and ceiling. The video shows by and large full-room shots of the set and some closeup shots of the band members. The closeup shots of the band members' faces are often opaquely overlaid on the total-room shots.
